Nila: Morocco’s Prized Blue Pigment, and Why the Real One Looks Like a Stone
In the spice markets of Fez and Marrakech, the most prized version of Morocco’s traditional blue pigment is not a powder. It is a dark, indigo-black block that looks and feels like a piece of rock. It has a plant story, a stone story, and a hundred-year-old grandmother in the neighbourhood who will only accept one form of it.

In the deepest arcade of the Attarine market in Fez, an old man sells small dark blocks from a shallow wooden tray. The blocks are the colour of a wet slate roof — a blue so dark it reads black in bad light, and only reveals its indigo under sun. He wraps them in newspaper. He does not label them. If you ask what they are, he will say nila, and if you ask what that means he will look at you as though the question is not one an adult should need to ask.
This is the ingredient that older Moroccan women know how to buy and younger visitors, and most of the modern natural cosmetics industry, do not. It has two very different origin stories, a genuinely complicated chemistry, a specific traditional use, and a market currently flooded with cheaper imitations. This article is an attempt to describe it plainly.
What Nila is
Nila (نيلة, sometimes transliterated neela, neela, or nila zarga) is the Moroccan Arabic name for a dark blue pigment used traditionally in cosmetics, hair care, textile dye, and — in older bridal preparations — as an intensifier for henna and kohl. The name shares a root with the Arabic word for the Nile river and, more distantly, with the Sanskrit nīla, meaning dark blue. In everyday speech it refers to any traditional deep-blue pigment used for beauty; in a Fez souk it refers to something more specific.
What is sold as Nila in Moroccan markets can be one of three things, only one of which is what grandmothers mean when they use the word:
Three things sold as “Nila”
- The block (nila hajariya, “stone Nila”)
- Dark blue-black solid blocks, dense, faintly iridescent at the fracture. Sold whole or in chips. This is the traditional, prized form — the one older Moroccan women will accept — and the one this article is about.
- The plant powder
- Loose dark-green to dark-blue powder, sometimes labelled “natural indigo” or “henna bleu.” Botanically the same underlying pigment as the block, but processed differently and generally weaker in colour delivery. Cheaper and easier to counterfeit.
- The synthetic dye
- Bright, uniform blue powder, sometimes wet-mixed with a small amount of true indigo to pass casual inspection. This is not Nila in any meaningful cultural sense; it is textile dye repackaged for the beauty aisle. If the colour is a clean unmixed blue and dissolves instantly and evenly in water, it is almost certainly this.
The Nila that matters — the one that has been used in Moroccan cosmetic tradition for centuries — is the first. Everything below refers to the block form unless stated otherwise.
Two stories of origin
Nila has two origin stories that circulate in Morocco simultaneously, and it is worth setting both out plainly rather than choosing between them.
The botanical story, which is what the chemistry supports, is that Nila is the same pigment as classical indigo — extracted from plants of the genus Indigofera, particularly Indigofera tinctoria, cultivated for millennia across South Asia and North Africa. The leaves are fermented in large vats. The fermentation converts a colourless precursor called indican into indoxyl, which oxidises on contact with air to form indigotin — the dark blue pigment. The liquid is left to settle. The sediment is drained, dried, and pressed into solid blocks that harden into a stone-like consistency. This is the same process that produces the indigo cakes historically traded from India, Egypt, and West Africa, and the same pigment that dyed Tuareg tagelmust veils blue enough to stain the wearer’s skin.
The mineral story, which is what older Moroccan tradition often insists on, is that the real Nila — the one worth paying for — comes from a specific stone found in a specific place, ground and refined into the block form. In some tellings the source is a specific quarry in the Middle Atlas; in others it is a rock formation in the Anti-Atlas near Rissani; in others it is simply “a stone from the mountain.” Older women in Fez and Marrakech will describe the fracture surface of the block, the way it flakes, the way it powders under a stone quern, in the same vocabulary they would use for a mineral.
Which story is true
The chemistry is unambiguous: the pigment in the block is indigotin, which is a plant-derived molecule. The block form is what fermented indigo hardens into after settling and pressing. In that literal sense, Nila is botanical.
But the mineral story is not simply an error. Traditional Moroccan production of Nila blocks involved local grinding and re-pressing with a small proportion of mineral binder — often ferruginous clay or a specific volcanic ash — which changed the density, colour depth, and behaviour of the finished block. The result is a hybrid material: plant pigment in a mineral matrix. When a Fez grandmother says the block comes from a stone, she is not confused. She is describing a specific regional preparation that combined indigo with mineral binders and was processed until it looked, felt, and fractured like rock.
Both stories are, in that sense, correct. The plant makes the colour; the mineral makes the block.
The indigo plant
Indigofera tinctoria is a small leguminous shrub, thigh-high to waist-high at maturity, with small oval leaves and pale pink flowers. It grows readily in warm, semi-arid climates and has been cultivated across North Africa for well over a thousand years. Morocco’s traditional production zones were the Souss valley, parts of the Draa valley, and the oases around Rissani and Erfoud, all of which combine adequate rainfall with the heat the plant requires to accumulate indican in its leaves.
The extraction is one of the most patient procedures in any traditional dye or pigment craft. Leaves are cut just as flowering begins, when indican content is at its highest. They are packed into large stone or earthenware vats and covered with water. Over three to six days — depending on ambient temperature — the leaves ferment. The vat gives off a distinctive smell that older dyers describe as “green rot,” and the liquid changes from clear to yellow-green to a deep bronzed green.
At the correct point the fermented liquid is drained off the leaf matter and beaten vigorously with wooden paddles. Air is folded into the liquid. The indoxyl in solution oxidises on contact with the air and precipitates as indigotin — a fine, dark blue-black particulate that sinks slowly to the bottom of the settling tank. The clear water is decanted. What is left is a wet blue paste that is scraped out, drained on cloth, dried, and — in the Moroccan tradition — mixed with a small proportion of fine clay or ash and pressed into blocks.
The whole process, from leaf to finished block, takes ten to fourteen days and consumes an enormous volume of leaf per unit of pigment. This is why real Nila has never been cheap.

The stone form and how it is made
The final stage of traditional Nila production is what gives it the mineral character that older buyers look for. The wet indigo paste is mixed with a small amount of finely powdered mineral binder — historically, a specific ferruginous clay from Middle Atlas deposits, sometimes replaced today with kaolin or ghassoul dust — and pressed under weight into wooden moulds. The blocks are left to cure in shaded, dry conditions for several weeks. Over that time the mixture hardens until it can be handled like a piece of stone: it will not powder from finger pressure, it fractures conchoidally along dry planes, and its density is roughly two-thirds that of chalk.
A good Nila block:
- Reads black at first glance and reveals a deep indigo-blue only under direct sun or against white paper.
- Has a fracture surface that catches the light with a faint metallic or waxy sheen, not a matte powder finish.
- Powders reluctantly. Grinding it in a stone quern or against another block yields a fine dark powder, but it takes work.
- Leaves a strong, saturated blue-black streak when drawn across unglazed clay or coarse paper.
- Dissolves partially and slowly in water: the pigment disperses, some mineral matter settles, and the water takes on a translucent blue that deepens over minutes rather than seconds.
These physical properties are what a Fez souk trader assesses when he sells a piece and what an experienced buyer looks for when accepting one. None of them are marketing. They are the observable characteristics of a real, traditionally prepared block.
Why grandmothers ask for the block
There are three reasons the block form is prized over the loose powder in traditional Moroccan cosmetic culture, and understanding them helps explain what the ingredient is doing.
Concentration. A traditionally prepared block delivers more indigotin per gram of raw material than most commercial powders, because the fermentation-and-pressing process concentrates the pigment and the mineral binder is a very small proportion of the final mass. A gram of good block yields the same practical colour intensity as three to five grams of loose plant powder.
Predictability. The block form is chemically and mechanically stable. Loose indigo powders vary wildly in strength between batches — depending on plant source, fermentation completeness, and adulteration with cheaper dye — and grandmothers who use Nila in bridal preparations cannot afford to guess at strength. A known good block, ground the morning of use, is a known dose.
Shelf life. A properly cured Nila block will keep, wrapped in cloth in a dry cupboard, for years without meaningful loss of pigment strength. Loose plant powder loses colour within twelve to eighteen months even in good storage. In a tradition where a bride’s mother buys Nila for her daughter’s wedding and might have bought it years earlier from a trusted supplier, this shelf stability is not incidental. It is the point.
The plant makes the colour. The mineral makes the block. What older Moroccan women pay for is not a botanical ingredient. It is a specific traditional preparation whose stability is the reason it survives. Editorial statement — Moroccan Rituals
What the pigment does on skin
Indigotin, the active pigment in Nila, is a large planar molecule with strong colour delivery and, importantly for cosmetics, very low solubility in water. On skin it deposits as a superficial pigment layer rather than penetrating the epidermis. This is what allows Nila to work as a temporary skin tint that washes off over one to three days rather than as a permanent stain.
Beyond the pigmentation itself, Moroccan tradition and a limited body of modern published research attribute several other properties to Nila preparations:
What Nila is used for in Moroccan tradition
- Soothing and cooling
- Applied as a paste to sun-warmed or irritated skin, Nila delivers a cooling sensation attributed both to the mineral binder and to the mild astringent effect of trace fermentation byproducts. Used traditionally after long summer days outdoors and after the hammam.
- Brightening the perceived tone of the skin
- Applied thin and rinsed off, the deposited blue-black film has an optical effect that reads, once washed, as a slightly clearer and more even skin tone. This is a surface visual effect, not chemical lightening. It does not bleach; it does not thin the skin.
- Anti-inflammatory support
- Indigo has a documented history in traditional medicine across South Asia and North Africa as an anti-inflammatory topical for minor skin irritation. Modern research on indigo’s isatin and tryptanthrin content supports mild anti-inflammatory activity, though clinical evidence for cosmetic Nila specifically remains thin.
- Hair conditioning and darkening
- Mixed with henna, Nila shifts the henna’s final colour from copper-orange toward deep brown or blue-black — the traditional two-step method for Moroccan and Amazigh women who dyed their hair almost-black without commercial dye. Also used alone as a mild conditioning rinse in some regions.
Traditional uses — face, hair, bridal
Face masks. The most common domestic use of Nila is as a component of a weekly face mask, particularly after the hammam. A small quantity of freshly ground Nila powder is mixed with rose water, orange blossom water, or, more traditionally, warm goat’s milk, and applied as a thin paste to the face for ten to fifteen minutes. The paste is rinsed off with warm water. The immediate effect is a subtle cool tint on the skin that fades over the following twenty-four to forty-eight hours; the accumulated effect over weeks is reported as a more even-toned complexion.
Bridal preparations. In older Moroccan wedding traditions — particularly those documented in Fez, Meknes, and parts of the Sous — the bride’s henna preparation the night before the wedding sometimes included Nila mixed into the henna paste to deepen its final colour toward a rich near-black. This is the henné noir tradition, distinct from and centuries older than the modern “black henna” produced with para-phenylenediamine (PPD), which is chemically unrelated and genuinely dangerous. Real Nila-and-henna preparations are safe and traditional; PPD-based “black henna” is not.
Hair rinses. A cold Nila-water rinse after washing is used in some Amazigh hair-care traditions to darken graying hair gradually and add shine. The effect is cumulative and reversible; the pigment washes out over ten to fifteen shampoos if the practice is discontinued.
Textile use. Outside cosmetics, the same Nila is what dyed the traditional Moroccan and Saharan indigo garments — the deep blue-black robes and turbans that give the “Blue Men” of the Sahara their name. The relationship between the cosmetic and the textile use is close enough that older dye workshops in Rissani sometimes sold cosmetic-grade Nila as a side product.
A note on regional variation
The Nila block sold in Fez tends to be denser, harder, and darker than the version sold in Marrakech, which is typically slightly softer and more crumbly. Both are legitimate; the Fez form uses a higher proportion of mineral binder and cures for longer, while the Marrakech form uses less binder and is often faster to grind. Southern Morocco, particularly around Rissani and Erfoud, occasionally offers a genuinely rare form that is closer to pure fermented indigo with almost no mineral binder — this is what a small number of specialist buyers and traditional cosmetic makers seek out. It is very expensive and increasingly hard to find.
How to prepare and use it
The traditional preparation is straightforward once the block is in hand.
Break off a small piece
A pea-sized fragment is sufficient for one facial application; a walnut-sized fragment for a full head-mask or hair rinse. Wrap the remaining block back in cloth or paper and store dry.
Grind it fresh
Traditionally ground on a small stone quern or between two flat stones. A ceramic mortar and pestle works. Grinding takes several minutes; a good block does not powder easily and this is the correct signal. The finished powder should be fine and uniformly dark blue-black.
Mix with the liquid
For a face mask: mix roughly one teaspoon of powder with two to three teaspoons of rose water, orange blossom water, or warm milk. Whisk with a small wooden spoon until a smooth thin paste forms. The paste will look black initially; it deepens to a dark indigo as it hydrates.
Apply thin, not thick
Nila is used as a thin translucent film, not a thick opaque mask. A thick layer wastes pigment and does not deposit any more colour than a thin one — the practical limit of skin uptake is reached quickly.
Rest, then rinse
Ten to fifteen minutes is sufficient. Longer application does not intensify the effect and can slightly overload the skin’s surface with mineral binder, which then takes longer to rinse off. Rinse with warm water and a soft cloth until the water runs clear.
Follow with oil
Traditionally, a light layer of argan or prickly pear seed oil is applied to the still-damp skin after rinsing. This settles the surface, neutralises any faint blue tint that might remain, and gives the skin the finish that Moroccan grandmothers used to describe as naqi — clean, calm, quiet.
What to avoid buying
The Nila market has been actively flooded, since roughly the early 2010s, with cheaper substitutes that are not what the name traditionally referred to. Three warnings.
Avoid uniformly bright blue powders. Real Nila is dark, indigo-black, and its powder is never a clean bright blue. A powder that looks like sky blue or royal blue is either heavily adulterated with synthetic dye or is not indigo at all.
Avoid anything labelled “Nila” that dissolves instantly and evenly in water. Real Nila is partially insoluble; the mineral binder settles and the pigment disperses slowly. A powder that vanishes into clear blue water within a few seconds is a synthetic dye.
Avoid the “black henna” trap. Any product marketed as “black henna” that lists PPD, para-phenylenediamine, or paraphenylenediamine is not related to Nila and is genuinely dangerous — it causes severe contact dermatitis and permanent skin sensitisation in a meaningful fraction of users. Real Nila-henna preparations are safe, but they require you to buy the two ingredients separately (henna powder and a Nila block) and prepare them at home.
Sourcing, price, and the market today
A block of real Nila, purchased in Fez or Marrakech from an established Attarine trader, currently costs between 30 and 80 dirhams for roughly ten to twenty grams — enough for six months to a year of weekly domestic use at typical rates. The same weight of the same material, purchased outside Morocco from a specialist natural cosmetics supplier who imports directly, retails for the equivalent of 15 to 40 euros. The price gap reflects mainly transport and small-batch handling rather than any dramatic value-add along the way.
Traders who deal in the block form are typically older, run stalls or small shops in the deeper interior arcades of the Attarine or the Mellah, and do not advertise. If a stall has a colourful English-language sign making claims about purity or origin, treat that as a warning sign rather than a reassurance. The real block is sold quietly, wrapped in newspaper, by traders who do not need to shout.
The best route for a serious buyer outside Morocco is either a direct visit or a specialist supplier who can name the source region of the block, describe its fracture behaviour honestly, and — ideally — send a photograph of the specific block before shipping. Any supplier who cannot or will not do this is a supplier of loose blue powder, not of Nila.
