Argan Oil vs Prickly Pear Seed Oil: Which One for Your Face

They come from the same country, they are pressed from seeds, and they arrive in nearly identical amber bottles. Almost everything else is different. A precise comparison of Morocco’s two most important cosmetic oils — chemistry, use, and the reason one costs ten times more than the other.

Morocco produces two cosmetic oils that have earned international shelf presence in the last twenty years: argan oil, pressed from the kernel of the argan fruit, and prickly pear seed oil, pressed from the tiny seeds inside the prickly pear cactus fruit. They are often marketed as interchangeable — a “Moroccan face oil,” a “miracle oil.” They are not interchangeable. They do meaningfully different things, they cost meaningfully different amounts, and they should be chosen for different reasons.

This article compares the two on their own terms: origin, chemistry, behaviour on skin, use case, price, and authenticity signals. It is written for readers deciding which to buy, for readers using one and wondering whether the other would suit them better, and for readers trying to make sense of the price gap between them.

Where each comes from

Argan oil is pressed from the kernel of the fruit of Argania spinosa, a slow-growing tree endemic to a specific region of southwestern Morocco — the Souss valley and its surroundings, with a smaller population near Essaouira. The argan tree lives for around two hundred years. Each mature tree produces roughly thirty kilograms of fruit per year, and it takes about thirty kilograms of fruit to yield one litre of cosmetic argan oil. The argan forest was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1998, and the tree itself has been the anchor of a cooperative-based rural economy centred on women’s labour for the past several decades.

Prickly pear seed oil is pressed from the seeds of the fruit of Opuntia ficus-indica, the prickly pear cactus, which grows across Morocco, particularly in the arid regions of the east, centre, and southern Anti-Atlas. Each prickly pear fruit contains around two hundred to three hundred seeds. Each seed contains a fraction of a drop of oil. It takes approximately one metric tonne of fruit — after depulping, around eight hundred kilograms of dried, separated seeds — to produce one litre of cosmetic prickly pear seed oil.

This yield ratio is the single most important fact about the two oils. It is worth stating it plainly.

The yield problem

How much raw material one litre requires

Argan oil

Argan is expensive because it comes from a specific tree in a specific region and because pressing it is skilled work. Prickly pear seed oil is expensive for a different reason: the material yield is genuinely tiny, and there is no way to shortcut the ratio without switching to a different oil and mislabelling it. When a producer claims to sell pure prickly pear seed oil at a price similar to argan, they are either losing money on every bottle or selling something else.

Why counterfeiting is common

Because both oils are pale gold, faintly aromatic, and sold in small amber bottles, they are easy to blend or substitute with cheaper oils — refined sunflower, refined rapeseed, or refined argan — and difficult to distinguish by eye. Prickly pear seed oil in particular is one of the most commonly adulterated cosmetic oils on the international market. Buying at the cooperative level in Morocco, from a producer who will show you the pressing process, is the most reliable safeguard.

What is in each

Both oils are dominated by unsaturated fatty acids, but the balance is meaningfully different.

Argan oil is roughly 43–49% oleic acid (omega-9), 29–36% linoleic acid (omega-6), 12–14% palmitic acid (saturated), 4–6% stearic acid, and small amounts of other fatty acids. It contains 600–800 mg/kg of total tocopherols (vitamin E), unusually dominated by gamma-tocopherol rather than the alpha-tocopherol typical of most seed oils. This gamma-tocopherol content is one of the reasons argan is prized cosmetically: gamma-tocopherol has stronger anti-inflammatory activity per milligram than alpha-tocopherol in most published assays.

Prickly pear seed oil is roughly 55–65% linoleic acid, 15–25% oleic acid, 10–14% palmitic acid, 3–5% stearic acid, and small amounts of other fatty acids. It contains around 800–1000 mg/kg of total tocopherols — appreciably higher than argan — with a broader distribution across gamma-, alpha-, and beta-tocopherol. It also contains small quantities of betalain pigments and phytosterols carried over from the seed, both of which contribute to its distinctive light-yellow-to-green colour and to its skin activity.

How each behaves on skin

The higher linoleic acid content in prickly pear seed oil makes it “drier” on the skin — it absorbs faster and leaves less surface residue. Linoleic acid is a shorter, less viscous molecule than oleic acid, and skins with linoleic-heavy sebum tend to tolerate linoleic-rich topical oils particularly well.

The higher oleic acid content in argan oil makes it “richer” — it sits longer on the surface, gives a light sheen, and forms a mild occlusive layer that slows transepidermal water loss overnight. Skins with oleic-heavy sebum tend to tolerate argan comfortably; skins with linoleic-heavy sebum sometimes find it slightly too occlusive under makeup.

On the same forearm, a drop of prickly pear seed oil will be absorbed within thirty to sixty seconds and leave the skin feeling nourished but not slick. A drop of argan oil at the same volume will still show as a faint sheen after two or three minutes and will leave the skin feeling softly coated. Neither behaviour is better; they are the point of each oil.

What each is actually good for

Argan oil is well-suited to: dry skin that needs surface replenishment more than deep absorption; post-hammam application, when the skin is warm and permeable and the oil has room to work; hair, where its oleic-acid weight is the point (it coats the shaft and reduces water loss); nails, cuticles, and any body use case where a slight residue is desirable; overnight facial application on skins that tolerate a richer oil.

Prickly pear seed oil is well-suited to: combination and normal skin that reacts to heavier oils; under-eye and eyelid application, where the fast absorption and high tocopherol content suit thin, mobile skin; fine-line and photoaging maintenance, where the antioxidant load is the reason people report visible results over months; daytime facial use under makeup, where residue is a problem; oily skins that need barrier support without added surface oil.

The distinction is not that one is better than the other. It is that they belong at different points in a routine, and that different skin types weight one over the other. If you were going to use both, argan is closer to a night oil and a body oil, and prickly pear seed is closer to a morning serum and an eye oil.

How to tell if either is real

Both oils are counterfeited routinely, and both counterfeits share a common approach: mixing with cheaper oils (typically refined sunflower, refined rapeseed, or, for prickly pear, refined argan) and selling at a discount from the pure-oil price. The signals below are not laboratory grade but will catch the majority of adulterated products at retail.

Real argan oil has a distinct nutty aroma when cold-pressed. Cosmetic-grade cold-pressed argan is unroasted, so the nuttiness is mild — closer to raw almond than to roasted hazelnut. Culinary argan is made from roasted kernels and smells strongly of hazelnut; it should not be sold or bought as cosmetic argan, and buying culinary and using it on the face is a common mistake. The colour of real cosmetic argan is pale golden yellow, sometimes with the faintest green tint. It should not be entirely odourless — fully deodorised argan has stripped away most of the tocopherols and lost much of the skin benefit.

Real prickly pear seed oil is pale yellow to light greenish-yellow, has a faint vegetal smell (some describe it as green tea, hay, or fresh grass), and absorbs into the skin within thirty to sixty seconds when a small drop is rubbed on the back of the hand. If it sits on the surface like water on plastic, it is either adulterated with a heavier oil or oxidised. A drop rubbed between the fingers should feel almost dry within a minute. If it feels greasy after two or three minutes, it is likely blended with a cheaper carrier.

Neither oil should smell rancid, cardboard-like, or overtly sour. Both are prone to oxidation and should be stored in dark glass, away from heat and direct light, and used within twelve months of pressing. If a bottle you own has developed a rancid edge, it has oxidised; the vitamin E has done its job and been consumed, and the oil is no longer worth using on the face.

Price and what it reflects

A hundred-millilitre bottle of cosmetic-grade cold-pressed argan oil, purchased directly from a cooperative in the Souss valley, retails for around 15 to 30 euros. Purchased at retail in Europe or the United States from a producer who imports from the same cooperatives, the same bottle retails for 25 to 60 euros. The same volume of pure prickly pear seed oil retails for 80 to 200 euros at the cooperative and 120 to 350 euros abroad.

This price gap is not a marketing markup. It reflects the yield ratio described above. To press one litre of cosmetic argan oil requires around thirty kilograms of argan fruit — a day’s work for two women with traditional stone querns, less with a modern press. To press one litre of cosmetic prickly pear seed oil requires around a tonne of fresh fruit, or eight hundred kilograms of dried, separated seeds — a week of harvesting, depulping, drying, and sorting for a small crew.

If you see a hundred-millilitre bottle of “prickly pear seed oil” for 15 euros, it is not prickly pear seed oil at any meaningful purity. It is prickly pear seed oil blended heavily with something cheaper, or it is labelled prickly pear and contains something else entirely. The chemistry does not allow the price to be that low.

How to use each

Argan: two to four drops on damp, freshly-cleansed skin, pressed into the face rather than rubbed. Best applied at night, after the last water contact of the day. On the body, apply to still-damp skin within an hour of leaving a shower or hammam — this is when it seals in most effectively. On hair, one to two drops warmed between the palms and worked through the mid-lengths and ends after towel-drying; do not apply to the scalp unless the scalp is genuinely dry.

Prickly pear seed: one to two drops on the fingertips, warmed briefly against skin temperature, then pressed onto clean, dry, or lightly damp skin. Works well as a serum layer under a moisturiser or under makeup. For under-eye use, warm a single drop between the ring finger and the fingertip and press it in with the ring finger only — no rubbing, no dragging on thin skin. A well-stored 30-millilitre bottle used at this rate lasts four to six months.

Neither oil should be applied to broken skin, active acne lesions being treated with topical medication, or freshly waxed/threaded skin within the first hour after the procedure. Both are compatible with retinoids at appropriate spacing (retinoid at night on one evening, oil on the following) but should not be layered in the same routine.

Which to buy first

If you are new to Moroccan oils and can only buy one, buy argan. It is more versatile, more affordable, harder to counterfeit convincingly at the cooperative level, and closer to a general-purpose oil that will earn its place in a routine.

Prickly pear seed oil is a specialised product. It rewards specialised use — under-eye, fine lines, morning application under makeup, oily-skin barrier support. Bought and used correctly, it earns its price over months of daily use of a very small quantity. Bought carelessly, at the wrong price point, and used lavishly, it is a very expensive way to apply diluted sunflower oil to your face.

Using both

Argan and prickly pear seed oil are not competitors. They are partners in a mature Moroccan skincare routine, in the same way that a good moisturiser and a good serum are partners in any routine. Prickly pear seed in the morning under makeup; argan at night on damp skin after cleansing. Prickly pear seed on the eye area; argan on the neck, décolleté, and hair.

If Moroccan cosmetics have a single lesson to offer international skincare, it is that “an oil” is not a marketing category. It is a specific molecule with a specific job. The two oils described here happen to come from the same country and to arrive in the same amber bottles; they do genuinely different work. Choosing between them, or between when to use each, is choosing between two well-understood chemistries — not between two brands of the same idea.
